Employee Awareness

We make sure our employees are engaged and aware of our EHS programs and targets by publishing an online newsletter, displaying posters at our sites, running programs on internal TV monitors and holding events.

We also hold events at our sites around the world to excite people about EHS and to inspire them to take action:

Earth Day

Cutting paper waste

We celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010 by launching a global initiative to cut paper waste. Events were organized at our sites around the world to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of paper production and to encourage employees to use less paper and recycle more.

Employees who took a Plan Before You Print! pledge were entered into a draw for a MOTOCUBO™ A45 Eco mobile phone. Approximately 3,500 employees took the pledge, committing them to set default printer settings to double sided, to eliminate the use of cover pages and to help improve recycling programs. For each employee pledge, five trees were planted through Carbonfund.org.

The day inspired a number of innovative projects. Employees at the Bangkok office now collect one-sided print pages in special boxes, and after checking the print outs for confidential information, bind them into notebooks which are donated to local schools. This has enabled the office to reuse 90 percent of its printing paper.

The Motorola Foundation supported the initiative by donating 20,000 trees to Carbonfund.org’s Million Tree Challenge.

Green Team competition

To mark Earth Day, employees were asked to suggest ways to make our company and our customers greener, to post ideas for green product design and to inspire their colleagues with stories of how they have gone green at home.

The winning entries included:

  • Rami Levy, Plantation, Florida, proposed that we use non-removable batteries in our mobile devices. This would eliminate the need for the battery door, lowering costs and reducing the amount of parts and resources needed to make the device.
  • Otto Carlander, Linkoping, Sweden, is helping a hotel customer to go green by cutting battery waste. Together with the service provider’s installation team, Otto developed a system to charge set-top remote controls using a docking station, eliminating the need for disposable batteries. As well as reducing waste, the system will save time and maintenance costs for the hotel.
  • The Energy Conservation Team, Hong Kong, reduced site energy consumption by eliminating unnecessary florescent lighting. The team also raised awareness of the importance of energy saving by posting electricity consumption charts around the office.
  • The Labor Law Team, Schaumburg, Illinois, was recognized for taking many small steps to make a big difference to the environment. These included: unplugging all small appliances when not in use, bringing their lunches to work, reusing paper grocery bags as garbage bags and taking notes on the computer to reduce their use of paper. They are also using non-toxic cleaning supplies, non-disposable dishes and cutlery or paper plates which are biodegradable.  At home, team members have reduced the amount of energy used by opening windows and using blinds to regulate temperature instead of heating and air conditioning.

Global Day of Service

For the third year in a row, our 2010 Global Day of Service was themed "Green & Global". In 2010, more than 6,600 employees volunteered for over 300 service projects in 37 countries during our fifth Global Day of Service.
