Audits and Compliance

We conduct environmental, health and safety (EHS) audits at our sites to assess compliance with our EHS policy, management system and legal requirements.

Our ISO 14001- and OHSAS 18001-certified sites each undergo one of the following audits at least once a year through our staggered system:

  • Corporate-level audits of the EHS management system: Every three years by internally qualified auditors
  • Site-level audits of the EHS management system: Every three years by internally qualified auditors
  • Site-level audits of EHS compliance with legal requirements: Every three years by independent, third-party auditors
  • ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 surveillance audits:
    - Sites – every three years by independent, third-party auditors
    - Corporate oversight – twice per year by independent, third-party auditors

We also conduct compliance audits of our non-certified sites.

All non-compliances are recorded and tracked to ensure that corrective actions are implemented.

We are in the processes of changing the scheduling and frequency of audits and will report on the new system in our 2011 report.

In 2010, we achieved our goal of zero EHS-related fines, violations or citations.

The fine in 2008 related to incomplete ground water treatment at the North Indian Bend Wash site in Scottsdale, Arizona. At the time of the incident, Motorola, Inc.  was involved in environmental remediation at the former manufacturing location together with a number of other companies. As soon as Motorola, Inc. learned of the incident, the company informed the Environmental Protection Agency, investigated the cause and took steps to prevent future incidents. According to health experts at the EPA, the safety and health of area residents was never at risk. Motorola Solutions has now taken on responsibility for remediation at the site in place of Motorola, Inc.
