Coordinated action by governments will be essential to meeting the climate challenge. We support global mandatory greenhouse gas emission to reduce emissions by at least 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
Business must also play a significant role and Motorola Solutions is taking action in three ways:
We have reduced our carbon footprint by 45 percent and our energy use by 28 percent since 2005. Our continual focus on reducing energy use in our buildings brings significant costs savings, manages the risk of rising energy prices and prepares us for expected regulations.
Climate change also presents a significant business opportunity for Motorola Solutions and others in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry. The SMART 2020 industry report has identified opportunities to use ICT equipment to reduce global emissions by 15 percent by 2020. Read how our products are already helping to make the shift to a lower carbon world.
This year we launched a new climate change strategy, having met our absolute and normalized greenhouse gas reduction targets up until 2010. This includes a goal to increase our use of electricity from renewable sources to 30 percent by 2020.
We are assessing the lifecycle climate impacts of our products, making our products more energy efficient and using alternative energy sources where appropriate.
Motorola Solutions also contributes to climate change through the activities of our suppliers. Our long-term goal is to measure and reduce the climate impact of our supply chain.
